Dr. Maarten Hogenstijn is professor social entrepreneurship and has worked at AUAS since this university started focusing on SE in 2015. He has extensive knowledge of the social enterprise sector in the Netherlands as author of two (Dutch language) handbook on social entrepreneurship for students and teachers (Hogenstijn, 2018 and 2024) and member of the Review Board of the national ‘Code Social Enterprises’ (2019-2025). His projects have focused on social entrepreneurship in relation to local governments, on legal recognition of social enterprises, on impact measurement and on SE education, using methods such as learning networks and field lab settings to conduct applied research (see Hogenstijn, Meerman & Zinsmeister, 2018). Hogenstijn is educated as a human geographer, at Utrecht University (MA 2002, PhD 2008), and as a journalist (postdoctoral degree PDOJ, Erasmus University Rotterdam, 2003). He has extensive experience in using qualitative methods, in particular interviewing, focus groups and learning networks.
