Hattie O'Looney holds a First Class BA in International Development from the University of Sussex, including a year of study abroad at Korea University, Seoul. She completed an MSc in Sustainable Business, Environment and Society at the University of York, graduating with distinction.Hattie is committed to engaging with local communities outside of academia, founding and now serving as Event Director for a local Parkrun.

Her research focuses on exploring how overlooked or underutilised elements of society can be leveraged for transformative action, shifting practices away from capitalist logics towards equity, sustainability and social justice. She has previously partnered with Harrogate Business Improvement District to investigate the potential of introducing a mutual credit system as an alternative currency to support postcapitalist practices within local business ecosystems and governance. Her current work examines alternative organisational forms, such as worker cooperatives, community trusts, and social enterprises, to understand how their position within local ecosystems can be used to transform public service delivery to be more just and sustainable.
