  Researcher
My research has examined a range of topics related to culture in local development, including participatory cultural mapping, cultural strategies and planning, and culture-based creative tourism. These have been focused on culture as an active resource in local identity and imaginaries, as an inspiration and seed for collective action in processes of community entrepreneurship and empowerment. I have worked as a researcher and analyst in the cultural department of a large municipality, a national non-profit network in the area of cultural planning, and university contexts in Canada and Portugal. This trajectory has provided me with a key interest in connecting across sectors and different fields, to link research with practice(s), and to pursue “future-forming research.”

I am a senior researcher and co-coordinator of the Cities, Cultures and Architecture Research Group at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra, Portugal. Beginning in 2021, I will be co-ordinator of a new thematic research cluster at CES on “Urban Cultures, Sociabilities, and Participation.” My research has examined the roles of culture in local sustainable development, participatory and artistic approaches to cultural mapping, and culture-based creative tourism development, among other topics. I lead the CES research team within the H2020 research project “UNCHARTED: Understanding, Capturing and Fostering the Societal Value of Culture” (2020-2024) and I am a member of the H2020 project “URBiNAT: Healthy Corridors as Drivers for Regeneration of Social Housing Neighbourhoods through Co-creation of Social, Environmental and Marketable Nature-based Solutions” (2018-2023). In 2020, I participated in the South Africa-EU Dialogue on “Cultural Mapping, Planning and Impact Assessment for Sustainable and Just Urban Development.” I was the principal investigator of “CREATOUR: Creative Tourism Destination Development in Small Cities and Rural Areas,” a national research-and-application project (2016-2020) that catalyzed 40 creative tourism pilot projects in small cities and rural areas across four regions of Portugal. I am a member of the European Expert Network on Culture. I hold a PhD in Communication from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada.
